My Photography in the Boston Globe

PHOTO IN BOSTON GLOBE

Concert photography has recently become one of my biggest passions. When I went to see Boston, one of my favorite bands last month in Minnesota, little did I know that the pictures I took would end up all over the internet. It all began when I was contacted by the individual in charge of Tommy DeCarlo‘s Myspace page. DeCarlo, a former Home Depot employee, has made headlines for becoming Boston’s new co-lead singer and living his dream to the fullest. Anyway, they wanted to use one of my pictures on his Myspace page, and I gladly agreed as long as I was credited. You can now see the picture on the page, which has had nearly 200,000 views.

Earlier this week I was contacted by a journalist at the Boston Globe, who needed a picture for a feature story on DeCarlo. I was thrilled so I of course agreed, and now in today’s paper (Friday, August 1), you can see two of my pictures. A picture of Tommy appears as a teaser on the Music feature page, and a full shot of the band is available in the article itself. It’s very exciting to have my pictures appearing alongside my favorite musicians; it doesn’t get better than that as a concert photographer! (LINK TO ARTICLE)

One more item of note on this topic. My photo of Boz Scaggs taken on July 12 at the Moondance Jam in Walker, MN is now featured on the front page of his official fan community, you can view it here.

first, you should have charged the paper for using your photo instead of giving it away for free, and Second, you should have required that they send you a couple copies of it.

Yeah I thought about that – had no idea what to ask though!

I’ve asked for a copy so I think they will send me one.

Wow, Matt, congratulations. Three publishings in one month is pretty darn good! Nice job.
Yeah, you should be charging for use of your photos. Even $50 or something until you start getting a feel for what they might pay.
Helps pay for concert tickets or gas or whatever.

That’s cool! Have you thought at all about a career in photography? Do you take pictures for your high school paper? That’s pretty awesome to be getting photos published before you’re even in college.
