Queen + Adam Lambert?

Now that Adam Lambert, the stunning performer from the newly-ended season of American Idol, will soon be a free agent, chatter and rumors about his future abound. With his electric onstage persona and his ability to reach those impossibly high notes, Lambert would be a great fit for just about any rock band – and could even start his own. Before landing the number two spot in the competition, during the season finale Lambert gave impresive vocal performances alongside both Queen and Kiss. Throughout the season he made a name for himself as by far Idol’s most rock oriented performer as he sang hits from the likes of Aerosmith, Tears for Fears, Steppenwolf, Led Zeppelin, and Foghat. The Queen + Paul Rodgers collaboration essentially ended earlier this year as Rodgers reunites with Bad Company for a brief summer tour, leaving fans of Queen and Lambert alike to ponder a ‘Queen + Adam Lambert’ formation.

Last week Rolling Stone chatted with Queen’s Brian May, and both expressed sincere interest in Lambert. May stated: “It’s not like we, as Queen, would rush into coalescing with another singer just like that. It isn’t that easy. But I’d certainly like to work with Adam. That is one amazing instrument he has there.” May commented further, “[Roger Taylor] and I are definitely hoping to have a meaningful conversation with him at some point.” Only one obvious question remains: does Adam Lambert want to sing for Queen?

When the ‘American Idols: Live’ tour wraps up in mid-September, Lambert is free to pursue his own interests. One benefit of not winning the competition is that the singer will not be bound to a record contract. But even still, going out on tour to sing a catalog that is not his own may not be appealing to Lambert, especially if he wants to establish himself as a successful solo artist or as a frontman for a band of his own creation. We likely won’t know the answer to that final question for quite some time, so let the speculation continue.
