What’s Up with Aerosmith?

Things were definitely on the up-and-up for one of the most legendary rock bands early this summer. Aerosmith‘s planned tour with ZZ Top was sure to be a sold out sensation, and a new album was in the works – albeit pushed back. All of that changed when Steven Tyler fell off the stage during a performance at the Buffalo Chip Amphitheater. Ever since then, fans have been questioning the future of one of their favorite live bands.

There was the sighting of Tyler at a liquor store which turned out to be innocent, but then Joe Perry began to reveal in interviews that he wasn’t quite sure of how his bandmate and longtime friend was holding up – a consequence of a two month silence between Tyler and the rest of the band. When it comes to the new album, Perry is eager to get to work. “I’m down in my studio every day, writing, and for some reason he wants to write with people like (songwriter) Mark Hudson and whatever,” he says. “I can’t explain it.” In a more recent interview, Perry related his frustrations involving one certain member and the band’s fans. “I think that a lot of what happened with Aerosmith over the last two or three years has been a case of ]taking the fans for granted]. And I’m not talking about everybody in the band. I think at this point the four band members are willing to not play for a while until the fifth member gets together and decides to come and join us again.

From the sounds of it, there is much that Aerosmith – and Steven Tyler – need to work out over the coming months. However, the luxury of time is lacking as they are due on stage together for a set of two shows in Hawaii beginning this weekend. Perhaps these shows in paradise will see the rekindling of the relationships necessary to craft another Aerosmith album and tour. We can certainly hope so.
