Decades ago, musician extraordinaire Mark Knopfler took the world by storm as the band leader of Dire Straits. This spring, Knopfler will take the world by storm once again with a lengthy tour in support of his brand new studio album. Pieta Brown, an American folk singer, will provide support on the outing.
The Get Lucky world tour may not be an easy one for the singer-songwriter. The American leg starts on April 8 in Seattle, and the shows continue almost non-stop until May 9 when the singer takes a brief break before taking the tour across the ocean to his native United Kingdom. All said and done, the North American leg of the tour will see the 60-year-old Knopfler play 27 shows in just 31 days – not that bad of a feat.
Touring personnel will include Dire Straits alum Guy Fletcher on keyboards, and studio drummer Danny Cummings. In Europe, the tour will stretch from May to the very end of July with a focus in Germany and the UK.
With combined solo and Dire Straits album sales of 120 million, the reasons for touring and recording are far from financial. “It’s kind of an affirmation. It’s certainly something I don’t have to do financially; I just do it because I have a compulsion to go out and play every now and again, and it’s an important part of what a traveling musician does,” said Knopfler.
