The drama behind one of America’s favorite rock bands has been no secret. Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler has been on the outs with the rest of his bandmates as he deals with addiction issues and maintains his desire to work on branding himself as a solo artist. But now that guitarist Joe Perry has announced that auditions will be held to fill Tyler’s rather large shoes, the dilemma is about to go public to the extreme. But who’s to say that’s a bad thing.
If you’ve been living under some rocks, our earlier articles on situation Aerosmith can get you up to speed. All caught up? Here’s the latest scoop. Joe Perry recently talked to Canada’s QMI Agency, saying “[we'll] start having some auditions, making some phone calls. Hopefully, we’ll have found a new singer by the summer, and Aerosmith will be able to go back out on the road.”
Being back out on the road is the main frustration expressed in statements by Perry, as well as drummer Joey Kramer and guitarist Brad Whitford. The ill-fated “A-Z” tour with ZZ Top left a trail of canceled shows before ending in Steven Tyler’s infamous fall from the stage at the Legendary Buffalo Chip in Sturgis. Now there are songs to write and gigs to play – whether Tyler’s on board or not.
“It’s kind of hard to get a straight answer about what’s going on,” Perry said. “He has to have leg surgery and foot surgery and it’s basically going to take him out of the picture for about a year, year and a half. So, in the meantime, the rest of the band wants to play. And I want to play with the other guys in Aerosmith. So the four of us are just making our plans. We’re gonna find somebody to get in there and fill that spot. Just like when Tom was sick — we got David Hull to come in and play bass. When Brad was sick, we got somebody else to come in and play for him. That’s basically how I look at it; we need another singer to fill in.”
That doesn’t mean that the door on Tyler is closed shut, however, as Perry insists he doesn’t want to rule anything out. “I’m ready to write with him, to play on stage with him anytime he’s physically ready and wants to do it,” he said. “But it’s really up to him…and the last things he said to the press were that he wanted to work with the band and sing with the band, so we’ll see.”
Perry goes on tour this weekend for a run of shows in Canada with Mötley Crüe, and is on a roster of artists including Jimmy Page booked to play the Show of Peace in China on April 17 after he completes a tour of the UK with Bad Company. More information on Joe’s brand new solo album, Have Guitar, Will Travel, can be obtained at his official website.
